World’s No.1 Smartphone chipmaker Qualcomm has Snapdragon 4xx series for the entry-level segment. The latest edition in this series was Snapdragon 439 which was announced mid last year. When Snapdragon 439 was unveiled Taiwanese Chip Giant MediaTek had started using the 12nm process in its entry-level chipsets like Helio P22 and A22. Looking at it Qualcomm also went with the same TSMC 12nm process in Snapdragon 439. It was the first chip built by Qualcomm to use this fabrication process.

As of now, only a few smartphones have launched with Snapdragon 439. HMD Global launched Nokia 4.2 with it earlier this year. Xiaomi Redmi 7A was also powered by it. Recently launched Redmi 8A which is the successor of Redmi 7A also has SD439. The Redmi 8A has been priced 6599 Rupees in India. At this price, we have several smartphones powered by MediaTek Helio P22. The closest competitor is Realme C2 and others are Infinix Hot 8, Infinix Hot S4, Motorola E6s, etc.

If you are making your decision for buying an entry-level smartphone priced around 6-8k INR. You will have to understand which SoC is powerful Snapdragon 439 or Helio P22. Here in this article, I have gone through all the aspects of both these SoCs and in the end, I will give you a clear idea of whether you should pick Snapdragon 439 or Helio P22. Let’s get start it.

Right of the bat, Both Snapdragon 439 and Helio P22 are built on the TSMC 12nm fabrication process. As you guys do know fabrication process leaves an impact on power-efficiency, but here, in this case, the same process technology is used in both the SoCs. So in terms of churning out the power, both are equally placed. Now when we have taken a look at the fabrication process, the Next most important aspect is CPU.

In terms of CPU, Both Snapdragon 439 and Helio P22 are Octa-Core chipsets. There are 8 Cortex-A53 cores in both the siblings. Taking a look at clock speed Snapdragon 439 has 4 Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and 4 Cortex-A53 cores at 1.45GHz. In comparison to it, all the 8 cores of Helio P22 have the same 2.0GHz clock speed. Simplifying these terms, Helio P22 has a slightly better CPU because of the clock speed of all the cores.

Heading into GPU, The Snapdragon 439 comes with an Adreno 505 GPU operating at 400MHz. This GPU can run a Full HD Display. Flipping the side, Helio P22 has Power VR GE8320 GPU clocked at up to 650MHz. In terms of Display support, This GPU can turn on HD+(1600×720) 20:9 Displays. In my opinion, the GPU of the Helio P22 is slightly better than Snapdragon 439.

Speaking about ISP, Qualcomm has used a 2xISP in SD439. It backs up to 8MP dual camera and up to 21MP Single Camera. On the other hand, Helio P22 does support 13+8MP Dual Camera and 21MP Single Camera. Talking about connectivity, Snapdragon 439 comes with a Snapdragon X6 LTE Modem. This modem has support for Cat 4 Downlink to give up to 150Mbps Download speed and Cat 5 Uplink for up to 75Mbps upload speed. On the other side, Helio P22 LTE Modem uses Cat 7 Downlink and Cat 4 Uplink. In the last, Snapdragon 439 is supported for LPDDR3 RAM and UHS-1 Storage whereas Helio P22 has support for LPDDR4X RAM and eMMC5.1 Storage.

Now when we have compared both the SoCs, It is time for me to give a verdict or conclusion. Don’t get me wrong, I would say you can pick any of the chips. It is not a lot different in them, In fact, fabrication process and CPU are the same. The Helio P22 has a better GPU, ISP, and LTE. Before making your decision based on SoCs only, You should look at other features of your next smartphone because there is not a huge gap between these chips.
